Overall Growth In Australia's Total Import and Export Values
Yearly Change for Both Total and Sub-categories
Changes and trends in Sub-Categories’ Import Percentages in Machinery and Transport Equipment
Australia’s Import and Export Trade from 1988-2021
CONCEPT
This is an assignment for my undergraduate Data Visualization course, which is about Australian international trade in imports and exports from 1988 to 2021. In this assignment, we learnt how to understand and work with large datasets and data types, and use different visualization techniques to visualize these patterns and reveal the data stories within the dataset.
DATA
Australian International Trade dataset is extracted from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and contains data over 30 years from 1988 to 2021. The dataset has import and export information, including 10 main categories and 67 subcategories. Each subcategory deals with the performance of multiple industries in terms of productivity and resources.
The 10 main categories are as follows:
0. Food and live animals
1. Beverages and tobacco
2. Crude materials, inedible, except fuels
3. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials
4. Animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes
5. Chemicals and related products, nes
6. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by material
7. Machinery and transport equipment
8. Miscellaneous manufactured articles
9. Commodities and transactions not classified elsewhere in the SITC
PROCESS
In this project, the data visualization process is as follows:
-
Understand the dataset and create statistical (Ratio) and analytical (Yearly Change) patterns for the dataset
-
Conduct an exploratory analysis of the dataset to identify key trends and changes, and explain the reasons behind the trends
1) Time Series Charts
2) Interactive Charts
3) Visual Dashboard
-
Create a storyboard to summarize findings from main category to subcategory analysis
-
Summarize the data visualization techniques used and their benefits
-
Findings and Recommendation
